Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. 292 pages. Octavo (8 1/4" x 5 3/4") bound in original publisher's red cloth with silver lettering to spine in original pictorial jacket. First edition. The Shaft successes behind him, Tidyman has written a somewhat more seriously intentioned novel of… Cleveland detectives during an all too body-filled period of two or three days -- hard rain, black sky, a cold wind coming down off Lake Erie, and a killer cop as a hit man for the local Mafia. The reader is swept from scene to bleak scene of violence, sinister pizza parlors, bars, hijackings, gunnings, rapes with plenty of police procedure. Detective James Dempsey, aging, balding, divorced by a frigid wife who boils like a screaming kettle whenever he tries to visit his kids, is an empty man who sells his soul to the big hoods and plans to start over in South America when his nest egg outweighs his leaden heart. But the department has finally started looking into the six deaths for which he's responsible. While the Mafia steps up its truck heists, Dempsey gets paid to rub out a driver-stoolie. He's also into some mad athletics with a throaty singer. His demise brings fair irony -- strong enough for a flick -- but Tidyman's fake grim humor never rises above the crime entertainment level even if he has something more ambitious in mind. Still it might do well. Condition: Corners gently bumped, small tape stain to front paste down. Jacket lightly soiled, 2 inch by 1 inch jagged tear to spine head extending to back else very good in like jacket.

Clement Archer, head of a popular radio show, faces a profound dilemma: Five of his employees stand accused of being communists, and a magazine threatens disclosure unless Archer fires each and every one. Despite his efforts to meet his own moral standards and avoid self-incrimination, Archer finds himself hounded from both ends of the political spectrum for his seemingly righteous actions. The Troubled Air, Irwin Shaw's second novel, was published immediately before the author moved to Europe, where he lived for the next twenty-five years. The story remains a powerful portrayal of a good, decent man ensnared by the hysteria and cruelty of a dark period in American history. >> This is a reading copy. Multiple Creases to Covers, pen to front end page; wear to paper spine. Size: 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall. Painted Cover (illustrator). Book.

Soft cover. Condition: Good to Very Good. Fifth Edition. 188 pages; ** Goodreads: The time is 1902. The setting, eastern Oregon. Magic Child, a 15-year-old Native American girl, wanders into the wrong whorehouse looking for the right men. She finds Cameron and Greer, two gunmen taking a timeout from the game after an aborted job… in Hawaii. Their violent past doesn't concern Magic Child. She wants them to kill a monster for her, one she says lives in the ice caves under the basement of Miss Hawkline's yellow house, and one she says has killed before. But the more she tells them about the monster, the more her story unravels, until it isn't clear if the monster is even real, or if anything else is. Richard Brautigan's classic surrealist novel has inspired for decades with its wild, witty, and bizarre encounters with western-themed psychedelia. ** Genres: Fiction, Horror, Westerns, Gothic, Fantasy, Humor, Novels, American, Literature, Historical Fiction; >> Moderate creasing and Scuffing to covers, Size: 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall.
