Ward set himself up with a small general store and over the years was elected to various offices in the community: Justice of the Peace (1858-1874); postmaster for fourteen years; town clerk for fourteen years, as well as secretary of the school board for fourteen years. As its first postmaster, he gave the name Prairieburg to his post office. In 1874 Ward suffered a nervous breakdown and was housebound for four years. Ward never married and died in 1895.
