Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Book Club Edition. This is the 1960 BOOK CLUB edition of "Mutiny on the Bounty", the great adventure novel by Charles Nordhoff and James Norman Hall, published by Little, Brown & Co. in Boston. The book's jacket is graced with the exciting art of Henry C. Pitz. S…eldom has an artist captured so vividly such an adventurous and perilous scene for a dust-jacket. The authors novelized what had been one of the most remarkable real adventures of 18th century maritime history. This book is now Out of Print - OP. Captain Bligh was a harsh taskmaster, and the mutinous crew felt they had enduring enough. The jacket illustration depicts Captain Bligh and those crew members who had remained loyal, cast adrift with from the Bounty in the midst of a heavy sea - the mutineers jeering at them from the stern of the ship. Bligh and his crew of 18 were given scant supplies, but they managed to accomplish the incredible feat of rowing more than three thousand miles across the unforgiving ocean to land and safety. Those who remained on board the Bounty had adventures of a different sort. Kudos to Henry Pitz for such a dramatic rendering! TITLE : Mutiny on the Bounty AUTHORS : Charles Nordhoff & James Norman Hall DUST-JACKET ART : Henry C. Pitz (1895 - 1976) IMPRINT : Little, Brown & Company PLACE : Boston DATE : (1960) EDITION : BOOK CLUB EDITION STATUS : Out of Print - OP DETAILS : Trade hardcover, issued through a book club; approx. 5 1/2" x 8 1/4", blue, paper-covered boards and spine, with lettering and decorative embellishment in dark blue. Top text-block edge dyed red; 337 pages; pictorial dust-jacket. CONDITION -- This is a previously owned book that remains clean and attractive, with the following particulars noted : EXTERIOR -- Bottom spine extremity is compressed; top edge of front board has a touch of weathering (this corresponds to a small impact wrinkle on the dust-jacket - else the cover is clean with negligible signs of handling. BINDING -- Solid INTERIOR -- Slight production-related toning to end-papers (slight darkening from glue used in book's construction)- else the interior is clean and free of marking. No signatures DUST-JACKET -- There are a few small spot (a couple on the rear panel seem like foxing - and some are just slightly to be discerned on the front panel); there is a bit of rub on the rear panel; there is the previously mentioned wrinkle to the top edge of the front panel, as well as a similar but lesser wrinkle to the rear top edge; over all the jacket is exceptional and displays very nicely. The reverse of the jacket is toned (most obviously down the spine panel) and there are a couple of dents, which do not affect the outer jacket. The whole is kept within a clear mylar sleeve to ensure against further wear. Henry C. Pitz (1895 - 1976) (illustrator).

Add to basketA nice item, casting light on the practice of the provincial medical profession in Victorian England. See Higginbottom's obituary in the British Medical Journal, 16 March 1895. There are a number of references to Higginbottom in the memoir of 1861 memoir of Marshall Hall (1790-1857) by his widow. For information about Hall, who…died the following year, see his entry in the Oxford DNB, together with that of the otologist Joseph Toynbee (1815-1866). The item is from the papers of Rev. Samuel Walker, successively of Nottingham and Liverpool. 4pp, 12mo, with a concluding fifth page, including Higginbottom's signature, written lengthwise on the first page. Bifiolium. In good condition, lightly aged. Walker is nowhere named as the recipient - the letter is addressed to 'My dear Sir' and signed 'Marshall Hall Higginbottom' - but the references to 'Mrs. Walker', and the recipient's time in Nottingham, seem conclusive. The pleasure Higghinbottom was given by receiving Walker's letter and recognizing his handwriting was mitigated by the news of his continuing indisposition, including the 'relaxation of the throat' he was suffering from when he was in Nottingham. He urges him to 'consult an eminent physician in London, and I am sure you cannot do better than have Mr Toynbee's opinion'. He considers Toynbee 'an extremely clever man', who has 'devoted himself exclusively to the study of the Ear'. As his uncle 'Dr Hall' has 'not made diseases of the Ear a distinct Study', he will not recommend Walker to his 'best attention', but he is willing to write to Toynbee, having received 'a letter from him in reference to a patient not long since'. Should Walker wish for 'a change of air', the Higginbottoms will be pleased to receive him. His 'professional engagements' have prevented him from increasing his 'study of old Divinity' since Walker was in Nottingham, but he is looking forward to doing so in future. He sends the regards of his father and 'Mrs. H. Florence, Mr & Mrs. Hall' to the recipient and 'Mrs. Walker'.
