This is a French language edition of "Gargantua" by François Rabelais, issued in paperback format as No. 26 of series "Bibliotèque de Cluny", published by Editions de Cluny in 1939 in Paris. It's a nice, serviceable, pre-war specimen of this work by the great French Renaissance Humanist writer, who was a master of ribald humor, and scathing satire. This copy, which still has the original dust-jacket, came from the personal library of Robert Browning, Professor Emeritus of German at Hamilton College. The book has Professor Browning's signature on the first page of the book (flyleaf). Browning was an esteemed scholar of German literature. There are a few penciled notes by the professor in the margins. INTERIOR : Paper is unavoidably lightly toned throughout; re the aforementioned penciled notes and a few penciled underlinings by the Professor; there are some scattered small spots and - or smudges, but upon perusal none seem egregious.
