The Stanley Motor Carriage Company, an American manufacturer of steam cars, operated from 1902 to 1924. "During the mid to late 1910s, the fuel efficiency and power delivery of internal combustion engines improved dramatic…ally and using an electric starter instead of the crank, which had been notorious for injuring its operators, led to the rise of the gasoline-powered automobile, which also was much cheaper. The Stanley company produced a series of advertising campaigns trying to recover the car-buying public away from the "internal explosion engine," but it was unsuccessful. Their advertising slogan was, "Power - Correctly Generated, Correctly Controlled, Correctly Applied to the Rear Axle." These were early examples of the fear, uncertainty and doubt advertising campaign, since their aim was not to convince buyers of the advantages of the Stanley Steamer but to suggest that internal combustion automobiles could explode . The company suffered a period of decline and technological stagnation. Production specifications show that no model with a power output of more than 20 hp (15 kW) was produced after 1918. Better cars were now available at much lower cost. For example, a 1924 Stanley 740D sedan cost $3,950, compared with less than $500 for a Ford Model T. The widespread use of electric starters in internal combustion cars, beginning in 1912, eroded the remaining technological advantages of the steam car. The smaller scale of merchandising, a lack of effective advertising, and the general desire of motorists for higher speeds and faster starting than offered by Stanley vehicles were the primary causes of the company's demise. The factory closed permanently in 1924" (Wikipedia). Edges worn and chipped, a good copy. A very ephemeral, fragile advertisement printed on newsprint. (#167704).

Advertising leaflet, printed in blue, light brown and black, featuring six models of Nash four-cylinder automobiles with 112-inch wheelbase available circa 1922, with specifications for the Nash Four Model 41 Series. "Nash founded the Nash Motor Company in 1916…after purchasing the Kenosha-based Thomas B. Jeffery Company. The Jeffery Company, best known for its "Ramblers," had begun life as a bicycle company in Chicago but, after a move to Kenosha, the company saw the coming tide and switched to producing automobiles. After the Jeffery family sold the company, the first Nash automobile rolled out of Kenosha's Rambler plant in 1917. Pledging to 'Give the customer more than he has paid for,' Nash built branch plants in Milwaukee, Racine, and Pine Bluff, Arkansas. During World War I, Nash negotiated a contract with the U.S. Army that made the Nash Motor Company one of the largest producers of trucks in the nation. By 1926 the Nash automobile was one of the nation's top selling makes of cars" (Wisconsin Historical Society). Some wear and several tiny chips along lower edge, some soiling to outer panels, a good copy. (#167703).

Several uncomfortable designs of black children (with pitch-dark skin), date this catalogue at roughly the 1930s, when the Cascelloid company was dubbed the "House of Constant…Progress" by the industry press for its material innovations (with the plastics Bexoid and Plastex). One page features a celluoid model by the noted designer Mary Lucie Attwell, a doll named "Diddums." The catalogue also displays the company's offerings of animal dolls, die-cast trucks, pool toys, golf and ping-pong sets, rattles, pinwheels, and more. Needless to say, color photography was not the norm at this time, and this catalogue comprises a beautiful set of vivid and sharp photographic prints. A truly exceptional example, unlike anything we've seen: simultaneously surreal and nostalgic. Oblong 4to. album. Blue leather-covered boards. Contains 29 color photographs, all 9" by 6.5" approx., mounted on rectos (one each) of light-gray cardboard leaves. About very good plus overall. Moderate rubbing and edgewear to boards. Several pages display mild soiling and offsetting from photos. Prints just a bit yellowed, but remain sharp, vivid, and clean.

Folio (approximately 485 × 300 mm), three volumes containing 481 large samples: [44] pages with 123 lace samples (predominantly mounted on green card); [40] pages with 176 lace samples (predominantly mounted on pink card…); and [47] pages with 182 scalloped lace handkerchief samples (predominantly mounted on purple card). Cord-bound cloth covers lettered and decorated in gilt, and decorated in blind (the first two volumes), and screw-bound plain pebble-grain cloth; covers flecked, rubbed and bowed, with the extremities a little bumped and worn; minimal signs of age and use; in excellent condition. All samples in these very impressive albums come with individual reference numbers, sizes, prices and other details; the samples in the first two volumes are loosely inserted in custom-made album leaves. 'St. Gallen embroidery, sometimes known as Swiss embroidery, is embroidery from the city and the region of St. Gallen, Switzerland. The region was once the largest and most important export area for embroidery. Around 1910, its embroidery production was the largest export branch of the Swiss economy with 18 percent of the overall export value. More than 50 percent of the world production came from St. Gallen. The decline of the embroidery industry began in 1914 with the outbreak of the First World War. The demand for luxury products - and embroidery counted among these - collapsed suddenly, and also the free trade zones were disrupted. Partially neutral countries were still customers, but they could only compensate in the short term. To preserve wages somewhat from the free-fall, maximum working hours and minimum wages were now also fixed. In fact, these measures were rather counter-productive - only workers who demanded less than the minimum wage got a job. The year 1917, still in the middle of WWI, temporarily brought a surprising turn: the Entente forbade the export of cotton products to Germany, but not the export of embroidery. Therefore, every cloth to be sold to Germany was embroidered in some way, as embroidery could be sold. A year later, the sale of embroidery to Germany was forbidden, too, and this meant the end of the brief upturn. The last little flurry of exports came in 1919 after the end of the war, when the reconstruction of the war-stricken countries brought another short rise. With the start of the economic crisis, the heyday for the St. Gallen embroidery was finally ended. One sign of the extent of the crisis, is that from 1910 to 1930, the population of St. Gallen was reduced by emigration (as a result of unemployment) from 75,482 to 64,079' (Wikipedia).
