Hardcover. Condition: Good. Based on a series of conversations between Artist David Hockney and the art critic Martin Gayford, this book distills the essence of the artistâs lifelong meditations on the problems and paradoxes of representing a three-dimensional world on a flat surface. How does drawing make one âsee things clearer and clearer and clearer stillâ? What significance do differing media, from a Lascaux cave wall to an iPad, have but for the images we see? What is the relationship between the images we make and the reality around us? These conversations are punctuated by wise and witty observations by both artist and interviewer on many other artists â" Vermeer, Tiepolo, Caravaggio, Van Gogh, and Monet among them â" and enlivened by shrewd insights into the contrasting social and physical landscapes of California, where Hockney spent so many years, and East Yorkshire, his birthplace, to which he has now returned. 100+ illustrations in color and b&w. 248p.
Oversized Hardcover. Condition: Good. Critically acclaimed and universally popular, David Hockney discusses his humanistic artistic vision and its roots in his personal experiences. The fusion of the technology of painting and playfulness in his work is revealed in the hundreds of full-color images encompassing painting, drawing, stage design, photography and printmaking. A candid and insightful work. List of illustrations, index. 248p.

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good dj. Illustrated by the artist (illustrator). First Edition. [no discernible wear to book; the jacket is lightly soiled and has some surface deterioration (possibly from insect-nibbling) and a tiny tear at the upper front hinge]. (lithographs) A small volume, limited to 3500 copies, with rather a strange conception: the "portraits" that are presented as full-page illustrations in the body of the book are actually only details from larger works, and occasionally don't even depict the person whose portrait it is (i.e. the detail from "Henry [Geldzahler] at the Table" shows only a potted plant, not the man himself). Then, in the back of the book, the full portraits from which the details are taken have been reproduced, but in tiny size (two or three on a page), accompanied by measurements, printing information, and other specs for each piece. Some of Hockney's subjects are: Brooke [Hayward] Hopper, Michael Crichton, Billy Wilder, Christopher Isherwood and Don Bachardy, and Hockney himself.

Paper Ephemera. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Offered is an original thermal fax dated March 16, 1989 and sent from "DH IN THE HILLS" (David Hockney's home and studio in the Hollywood Hills) to the David Hockney office on Santa Monica Boulevard in West Hollywood, California. Measuring 14-1/8" by 8-1/2", the fax shows a delightful drawing by Boston artist, and good friend of David Hockney, Bing McGilvray of David Hockney ("AS FRAGONARD") drawing a portrait of Butch Kirby ("BUTCHY AS HAMLET"), who lived at the Hollywood Hills home at the time, while David Hockney's dogs (unnamed in the drawing, although Stanley and Boodgie) barking merrily at their feet. The thin thermal fax paper is lightly crinkled. Provenance: I purchased this fax, along with several others, at a garage sale in West Hollywood in 1991 given by a young man who then worked at Data-Boy, now a long-defunct gay male bar publication, with its office located next to David Hockney's office on Santa Monica Boulevard and who had, on a few occasions, gone through their trash bin and removed several items of paper ephemera such as this one.

1p., 8vo. In good condition, lightly aged. Closely written in red ink. He begins by thanking him for being 'awfully sweet & kind' in writing, before going on to deal with the state of his health, it having been 'a difficult time, especially as I became so ill but at the moment things aren't too bad'. The results of 'all the horrible tests' in hospital have 'come out first class', and the 'weird symtoms [sic] have now been proved to have been caused by yet another of those unknown viruses which first of all attacked my guts & then my brain'. He is relieved to know that he 'isn't a neurotic nut after all'. He feels healthier now, but 'America didn't help, of course'. He is 'now painting again, & bursting at the seams with ideas'. He sends love 'to both you & Vilda & Purd'.
