Octavo,384 pp.,photographs. Publisher's handsome gilt blue cloth, corner crushed, inscribed by the author, a very good copy. The most handsome and definitive of all regional Australian bird books. Charles Belcher (1876-1970) was a foundation member of the Royal Australasian Ornithologists' Union and the Bird Observer's Club. He left Australia at the turn of the century and pursued an outstanding legal career in Africa, Cyprus and the West Indies. He was knighted in 1931 and retired to South Africa. Although he maintained his Australian links he only returned once in 1937. He also wrote The Birds of Nyasaland published 1930. Whittell p. 47; not in Wood or Zimmer. See also Wheeler, Jack.
