Lisa M Becker

Lisa M. Becker lives in Cottonwood, California, with her husband, two sons, and their two beloved Akitas, Emiko and Rocco. Her love of Akitas began in 1995 when her family adopted a one-year-old Akita named Kuma. Since then, her family has raised six Akitas, including Emiko and Rocco. Akitas are a special breed of dog that originated in the snowy mountains of Northern Japan. They were traditionally used as hunting and guarding dogs, particularly for hunting wild boar and bear. Later, the Akita became known as a prized symbol of Imperial status, cultural loyalty, and national heritage. The breed is held in such high regard that small Akita statues are often given to someone who is ill as a wish for a speedy recovery. This tradition reflects the Akita’s association with good health, loyalty, and long life. In 2001, Lisa received both her BA in Liberal Studies and her teaching credential from Chico State in Chico, California. She spent 20 years teaching elementary and middle school students, including 11 years teaching middle school Social Studies. Her experience teaching ancient cultures helped deepen her love of history. Lisa’s lifelong love of the Akita breed, combined with her passion for education and history, inspired The Great Akita Rescue.Through the story, she hopes young readers come away with a deeper appreciation for bravery, courage, kindness, and the importance of loyalt
