Pablo Artal

Pablo Artal is a Spanish scientist and Professor of Optics at the University of Murcia, where he founded and leads the Optics Laboratory. For more than four decades, his research has focused on understanding the optics of the human eye and developing new technologies to evaluate and improve vision.

He is internationally recognized for his contributions to visual and biomedical optics. He has published more than 500 scientific papers, edited major reference works in the field, holds numerous patents, and has founded technology companies based on research developed in his laboratory. His work has received numerous major distinctions, including the King Jaime I Award, Spain’s National Research Award “Juan de la Cierva,” the Edwin H. Land Medal, and the Edgar D. Tillyer Award.

Alongside his scientific career, Artal has been actively involved in science communication and writing for a general audience. He has written extensively about science, universities, technology, travel, society, and everyday life, often approaching these subjects from the perspective of a scientist—with curiosity, skepticism, careful observation, and a sense of humor.

His books range from scientific and academic works to essays and accessible books for general readers, combining scientific knowledge with a broader, personal view of the world.
