Niels Dalgaard

Niels Dalgaard is an engineer, educator, guitarist, and author whose work explores the cognitive principles that shape musical understanding, creativity, and improvisation.

Combining engineering thinking with years of experience as a musician and teacher, he develops frameworks that bridge music theory, psychology, neuroscience, and pedagogy, making complex ideas accessible and directly applicable to musical practice.

Rather than focusing on formulas or stylistic imitation, his work investigates the underlying capacities that allow musicians to perceive, predict, create, and communicate musical meaning across any instrument or musical style.

He is the author of Tension and Resolution: A Framework for Creating Your Own Modern Jazz Guitar Language, a practical approach to contemporary improvisation, and The Line of Expectation, which introduces a cognitive model for understanding how musical expectations shape listening and musical creation. His theoretical work is further developed in the research manuscript Scientific Foundations of Musical Creativity.

His goal is to help musicians move beyond memorization, developing the perceptual and creative abilities from which genuine musical language emerges.
