Hi! I’m Heather Case-Hall, author and founder of Data in Plain Sight, a consulting business helping organizations understand their data, find gaps in their security, and make better decisions about cybersecurity and AI.

My work brings together data security, AI readiness, cybersecurity strategy, and helping organizations get the right expertise for security assessments and penetration testing. Sometimes that means building a program. Sometimes it means asking the question nobody has asked yet: “Why does everyone have access to that?”

I’m also the recipient of the 2026 Woman Cybersecurity Leader of the Year Award from the United Cybersecurity Alliance, a proud 22-year U.S. Army veteran, and a mom of three amazing kids, including identical twin girls who have kept me humble, entertained, and permanently outnumbered.

I’ve worked in IT since 1998 and cybersecurity since 2008. Along the way, I earned enough cybersecurity certifications that I eventually realized most HR departments had no idea what they meant. So, naturally, I went back and earned a master’s degree in Cybersecurity and Information Assurance, because apparently one degree is easier to recognize than a page full of acronyms.

My military and civilian careers have taught me that a security plan has to work for the people expected to follow it. Buying a tool is easy compared with figuring out who owns the data, who should have access, and who is responsible for fixing the mess. Add AI to that conversation, and those unanswered questions get interesting fast.

That’s why I write. I want people to understand cybersecurity, data privacy, and AI without needing a technical dictionary or pretending they understood the last five acronyms. Whether you run a business, work in IT, lead a security team, or just want to know what happens to the information you share, you deserve a plain-English explanation.

When I’m not talking about data protection, you’ll probably find me in my pottery studio at Gloria’s Pottery Barn, where I trade keyboards for clay and create something that doesn’t require a software update.

I’m also a Cancer, which means I always feel like I should be accomplishing one more thing. I claim sleep is overrated, but if I’m being honest, I absolutely love it.
