Jon Neiditz

Jon Neiditz writes about artificial intelligence, self-government, privacy, law, and the civic future of technology. A retired lawyer and longtime counselor on AI governance, privacy, cybersecurity and data ethics, he has spent decades helping institutions think through the human consequences of powerful systems before those consequences harden into habit.

He is the author of The Intelligence Republic, a series of pamphlets for America's 250th year. The first volume, AI Independence and the Future of Self-Government, argues that the next test of liberty is whether AI remains answerable to the people whose lives it mediates, and names the four powers that keep it so. The second, Legal Independence and the Coming Justice for All, turns to the oldest mediation of all, the law itself, and shows that for the first time in the republic's history the law can be legible and answerable to the people. The third, The Summons: Constituting the Intelligence Republic, sets out a working process by which communities hold the systems that govern them to account: citizens chosen by lot, in the tradition of the two institutions America already trusts with ordinary power, the jury and the town meeting, networked as never before. The same intelligence that forces the question on us supplies, at last, the scale to answer it.

Jon also writes The Hybrid Intelligencer, a continuing experiment in human-AI reflection on democracy, technology, law, and the search for public truth. He lives in Chattahoochee Hills, Georgia.
