Mike Dorcas

Michael E. Dorcas, Ph.D., is an ecologist, conservation biologist, author, scientific editor, environmental consultant, and wildlife artist. He previously served as an Endowed Professor of Biology at Davidson College and is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

His scholarly work includes 118 peer-reviewed journal articles, 25 book chapters, and eight books, with more than 150 scholarly publications overall. His books include Invasive Pythons in the United States, coauthored with J. D. Willson, and Snakes of the Southeast, coauthored with Whit Gibbons. His research has examined amphibian and reptile ecology, invasive species, and wildlife conservation, including the impacts of invasive Burmese pythons in Florida.

Dorcas received his B.S. and M.S. from the University of Texas at Arlington and his Ph.D. from Idaho State University. His books and scientific publications appear under Michael E. Dorcas, Michael Dorcas, and Mike Dorcas.

He is the founder of Tantilla LLC, the professional home of Tantilla Consulting and Tantilla Art. Through Tantilla Consulting, he provides scientific writing, editing, research, and grant consulting. His wildlife drawings in graphite and colored pencil reflect decades of field observation and natural-history experience.
