Jose E Tapia Tello

José E. Tapia Tello was born in Inca de Oro, a historic mining town in the heart of Chile’s Atacama region. The son of a small-scale miner and possessed of a wandering spirit, his life has been shaped by labor, displacement, and the memory of northern Chile. For decades he worked as a sign painter, a profession that led him to live in various parts of the United States and the Caribbean, before dedicating himself fully to writing.

In his work, Tapia Tello brings forth the voice of Andean communities, the harsh realities of mining life, and the quiet dignity of those who inhabit forgotten territories. La esperanza del Colla is an expression of this commitment to memory, identity, and resistance.
