DENIS KING
Denis was born in Hornchurch, Essex and began his musical career at the age of six as a banjolele-playing singer at childrens’ matinees. By the age of 13 he was part of one of the most successful pop groups of the 50s and 60s, The King Brothers - Britain's first Boy Band, and the youngest Variety act ever to play the London Palladium.
With the disbanding of The King Brothers in 1969, Denis studied orchestration at the Guildhall School of Music and got his break in television writing the theme for The Adventures of Black Beauty (Ivor Novello Award). To date he has composed the music for over 200 television series including Lovejoy, Dick Turpin, We'll Meet Again, Two's Company and Hannay.
Denis’ debut as a theatrical composer was with the Royal Shakespeare’s production of Privates On Parade (Ivor Novello Award) in 1977 and he has continued to collaborate ever since with theatre legends - Alan Ayckbourn among them - to co-write over 25 stage musicals, including Worzel Gummidge, A Saint She Ain’t and Stepping Out - The Musical, all for the West End.
His career has encompassed every aspect of show business, from singing and performing to producing, recording and composing and the artists he has worked alongside read like a Who’s Who of British and American stage and screen: Tony Bennett, Nina Simone, Howard Keel, Sammy Cahn, Albert Finney, Dame Edna Everage, Maureen Lipman, Elaine Stritch, Dudley Moore, Jimi Hendrix, Ronnie Corbett, Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland - many of whom feature in his popular memoir Key Changes.
His album of original songs, Love Is In The Room, launched in 2018. Since then he has been at the piano performing short reels for his YouTube channel and for a new series, DK Talks Music.
