J.C. Aldred writes fiction for readers who distrust the narrator. His novels occupy the borderland between historical adventure and psychological dissolution — stories told from the inside of a mind that cannot quite be trusted, in a world that will not quite stay still.

Drawing on the logbooks, superstitions, and violent hierarchies of the early eighteenth century, Aldred builds claustrophobic worlds where the line between confession and concealment is impossible to locate. His prose is spare, ceremonial, and quietly merciless.

He is particularly drawn to characters who document themselves — captains, penitents, soldiers, witnesses — and to the gap between what a man writes in his diary and what he actually did.
