James Mitchell

James Mitchell is a defence journalist and aviation historian with twenty years of experience covering military aviation, arms procurement, and strategic affairs. He has reported from air bases, defence exhibitions, and conflict zones across Europe, the Middle East, and Asia, and has interviewed pilots, engineers, and defence officials from more than thirty countries.

His reporting has taken him inside the cockpits of a dozen different combat aircraft — as an observer on operational flights with air forces across NATO and beyond — and his analysis of global aviation programmes has appeared in print and broadcast media on four continents.

Mitchell holds degrees in modern history and strategic studies, and has contributed to policy discussions on air power and defence procurement in several countries. He has lectured on military aviation history at universities and defence institutions, and advises documentary producers and authors on technical accuracy.

The World Fighter Jets series grew from his conviction that the aircraft a nation builds — and the ones it cancels — reveal more about its strategic character than any policy document.
