Eric Buvelot

Eric Buvelot is a senior reporter and writer who has lived in Bali since 1995. He began his career in France at the daily Libération, where he spent ten years mastering the craft of journalism. Over the decades, he has authored hundreds of articles on Bali and Indonesia, writing in both French and English. He served as editor-in-chief of La Gazette de Bali for 13 years, and his work has also appeared in leading outlets such as The Jakarta Post, Indonesia Expat, Now Bali, Asia Magazine (French edition), and Le Banian. He founded the multilingual newspaper The Communities of Indonesia and the lifestyle magazine Saga.

At Libération, Buvelot specialized in digital media, organizing interactive forums on Minitel (France’s pre-Internet system) and Audiotel around major global events including the Romanian Revolution, the fall of the Berlin Wall, the Gulf War, and the Maastricht Treaty. He also covered sports extensively, reporting on the Roland Garros Tournament, the Tour de France, the Premier League French Football Championship, and the Formula 1 World Championship. As a political observer, he interviewed prominent French figures such as Jack Lang, Dominique Voynet, Alain Madelin, Jean-Claude Gayssot, Lionel Jospin, Valéry Giscard d’Estaing, Jacques Chirac, and Robert Hue. Beyond print, he hosted the weekly music program Le quadrille des homards on Radio-Libé and contributed to Libération’s first CD-ROM release, Morceaux choisis par Libération, an interactive musical compilation.

Before journalism, Buvelot pursued a musician career as a member of the French New Wave rock band Mome Rath, with whom he went on tour and recorded two albums and several singles as a bassist.
