Harald Edwin Pfeffer

AUTHOR BIOGRAPHY:

Harald Edwin Pfeffer is a physician and poet based in Taumarunui, Aotearoa New Zealand. Born in South Africa to Austrian parents, he is trilingual (English, German, Afrikaans) and moved to New Zealand in 1987 after graduating from medical school to avoid compulsory military service in apartheid South Africa. He has practiced medicine in the rural Ruapehu District for over three decades, working as a general practitioner in communities shaped by isolation, resilience, and the dramatic landscape of New Zealand's North Island volcanic plateau.

His poetry merges the clinical precision of medical observation with philosophical inquiry, exploring consciousness, mortality, and the natural world through what he calls the perspective of the "Sceptical Healer." Drawing on his background in anatomy, biochemistry, and patient care, his work examines the boundaries between the physical and metaphysical, the observable and the unknowable.

He has written poetry since his high school days, though NO ATOM LOST represents his first sustained return to creative work after decades focused on medical practice. He lives in Taumarunui with his wife Desiree and their two daughters.
