Tom Reynolds is an author, coach, and consultant who is driven by a core question of what brings out the best in people. His favorite approach to that question is simply to be fascinated by all the surprising answers he has found. Across his rich life experiences as a Division III college athlete, an AmeriCorps volunteer, an assistant college track and field coach, a clinical psychology student, and a consultant at a Big 4 firm, he has found a range of answers that he wants to share with you.
When thinking about how to help leaders and teams solve their biggest problems, he likes to pull ideas from the evidence-based psychology literature. He combines that with a healthy dose of “lessons learned” while tripping over the execution of those ideas. At the end of the day, he is focused on helping you understand all the things might work and pushing you to experiment smartly with a handful of good ideas until you get traction in the right direction.
His philosophy is to think broadly, learn as much as you can, and then execute with clarity. If the world is full of unknowns, choose the best imperfect path and get decisive. The experiment will help you understand what works, what doesn’t, and where you need to adapt down the road.
Tom’s current work involves providing assessment, coaching, and development planning services to clients in manufacturing, heavy industry, financial services, and professional services industries. He also serves as the treasurer of a small non-profit called Leah’s Dream.
The Efficient Frontier of Teaming™ is Tom’s first book. Bryan Powell and Tom realized they needed to write this book after designing a few team solutions and deciding the broader world needed to try their ideas out. The book is meant to be an exercise in thought partnership. Readers should engage with the ideas, make them their own, and tell the authors how they have improved on them in their own work. It’s not about the book. It’s about empowering teams to be at their best, and find the unexpected path they needed to take to get there.
Currently, Tom operates a boutique consultancy called Leadership for the Long Term, LLC. With his PsyD and MBA training, he pulls together the best evidence-based practices alongside concepts from design thinking. A lean six sigma green belt, he also helps organizations think about their leadership development “system” from end-to-end. Put simply, he uses a range of tools to build simple solutions with systemic impact.
