Bernard Johnson was born in Oklahoma City and raised in Portland, Oregon, where he completed his early education and began developing the strong work ethic that would guide him throughout his life. During high school, he worked for three years in a busy men’s clothing store, gaining early experience in responsibility, discipline, and customer service.
As a young man, Bernard’s journey extended far beyond his hometown roots. His path led him back to Oklahoma at different points in his life and later to Atlanta, Georgia, where significant personal and professional experiences further shaped his outlook. He also spent time living in California, two years in Hawaii, and three years in Japan. These seasons of travel and relocation exposed him to diverse cultures, environments, and communities, deepening his understanding of people and strengthening his perspective on resilience and growth.
In the middle and later chapters of his life, family remained his anchor. Bernard is the father of six children and continues to credit his mother for the foundational values she instilled in him. Now retired and residing in Northern California, he reflects on the full arc of his journey, drawing on lessons from Oklahoma, Atlanta, and beyond as inspiration for his writing.
