Sarah Hanson

Sarah Hanson is the award-winning author of Conjuring the Hurricane, a memoir-in-verse about domestic abuse, childhood trauma, grief, and the fierce work of becoming free. Her debut has been recognized as the 2026 IPPY Outstanding Book of the Year, winner of the 2026 International Book Award for Best Contemporary Poetry, and named to Ms. Magazine's Best Poetry lists in both 2025 and 2026.

Sarah writes for anyone standing at the edge of a life that no longer fits. Through poetry, essays, and speaking, she helps women recognize coercive control, reclaim their own voices, and trust themselves enough to leave the lives that are harming them. Her work explores trauma, embodiment, sisterhood, resilience, and the lifelong practice of returning to oneself.

She holds a Master of Arts from the University of Chicago, where she studied New Testament, though she jokes that most of her education came from surviving childhood trauma, domestic abuse, and rebuilding a life from the ground up. She believes stories can become permission slips, and that sometimes the best way to save your life is simply to discover someone else already has.

Sarah's work has appeared in The Literary Times, Sierra Nevada Review, Saranac Review, Anti-Heroin Chic, and other literary journals. She is a contributing editor to the anthology Shaking Off the Ashes.

She lives in Minneapolis with her husband Jay, their three delightfully opinionated cats, Darwin, Waffles, and Princess Leia, and a To Be Read pile that continues to ignore structural engineering principles.
