Randy Dale

Randy Dale was born in Los Angeles in 1959. He was a skilled commercial fisherman and spear diver shaped by years of living, surfing, and working on the water. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, Randy was part of a generation of watermen exploring Indonesia, Australia, the South Pacific, and Mexico. He and Pablo Miller surfed Desert Point when it was still pretty much under the radar, when there was no infrastructure—just jungle. Fishermen dropped him off at Tavarua to camp when it was called Snake Island. In 1986, he was wrongfully accused of a crime on the island of Tonga and faced a lengthy prison sentence. Determined to escape, he set out on a perilous journey across the South Pacific in a twenty-foot fishing boat, bound for Australia. His solo voyage with no GPS and no contact with the outside world became a defining chapter of his life, reshaping his understanding of risk, freedom, and the ocean. Randy was featured in a couple of articles in The Surfer’s Journal, Vol. 2, #3, "High on a Cool Wave" by Peter Crawford, with a center-spread Desert Point from 1990. In 2006, Vol. 15, #4, “Go for your life, Mate,” was about his lost-at-sea story.

Randy loved to write and tell stories about his experiences at sea and on land. His life and survival story are chronicled in Escape from Tonga, preserving the voice of a man who lived by the tides rather than the clock.
