.AM NEEL is a researcher, narrative nonfiction author, and thriller writer based in Ketchum, Idaho.
He is the author of ten books of narrative nonfiction that explore complex systems, human behavior, and the persistent tendency to build things that do not work the way they were supposed to. His investigative work has covered subjects ranging from the history of American food safety to the unpredictable science of sleep and cognitive psychology.
Pivoting his fascination with flawed systems and "trust errors" into the world of fiction, he is the author of the high-tech locked-room mystery Almost Enough and the thriller White Out. His fiction blends meticulous, expert-led research with the rugged, isolated atmosphere of mountain-town noir.
When he isn’t untangling messy realities or auditing fictional ledgers, he works for the valley's twice-weekly community newspaper, the Idaho Mountain Express. He also acts as a coach for the 5B Ski & Ride Club youth program at the Sun Valley Resort during the winter an as a tennis instructor during the summer.
He maintains a regular stool at the Casino and a working relationship with the pool tables. Neither is a metaphor.
