Jon Harris' life has never followed a straight line.

Before the military, he was a police officer in Texas. He enlisted at thirty and served in military intelligence, trained in Russian and German, work that placed him at the center of Cold War tensions few Americans ever saw up close. When his service ended, he returned to law enforcement, starting the K-9 unit for the Gonzales, Texas Constable's Department and working narcotics interdiction in a High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area. On duty, he and his canine partner were trapped together in a horrific vehicle crash — he credits that dog with his survival. The physical recovery came first. The PTSD and traumatic brain injury came after, worsening the longer he stayed on the street.

At his therapist's suggestion, he took a job most people would have run from: contract dog handler in Afghanistan, then Iraq. Uzo, Jack, and later Mad weren't just working dogs. They were lifelines in places where the ground could erupt at any moment, and Jon found something in the rhythm of missions and the structure of service that years of trying to heal at home never gave him.

That experience became a long-running newspaper column, "Dispatches from Downrange," later folded into his award-winning memoir, A Year Behind the Leash — the story of a contract K-9 handler fighting, and winning, the war against PTSD with a dog at his side. It also became the foundation for his fiction. He wrote his first novel, Breakpoint, while stationed in Germany — a manuscript the military held for ten years before ever allowing its release. It went on to launch the Phil Swain espionage series. His newest series, The Contractor, draws directly on his own years in the private military world — the checkpoints, the contracts, the small, unglamorous decisions that actually keep people alive downrange.

At sixty, he did it again: entered law school, pushed through recovery, and became a prosecutor. Age, injuries, and scars, he'll tell you, don't define your limits.

He lives in New Mexico with his wife and best friend of forty-three years, Katherine. His son Joel, a West Point graduate, spent ten years in the U.S. Army and is now building his own career beyond it.
