Dr. Tiawana Brown is a nationally recognized advocate, justice-impacted leader, community health professional, and unapologetic truth-teller whose life and work live at the intersection of faith, resilience, and second chances.
A former Charlotte City Councilmember, community organizer, and nonprofit founder, Dr. Brown has spent decades fighting for people most often silenced by systems of punishment, poverty, and public shame. Her leadership is shaped by lived experience—not theory—and grounded in the unshakable belief that redemption is not a slogan, but a birthright.
Her debut memoir, Unbreakable: The Rise, the Fire, and the Fight, is a raw, fearless account of survival, public scrutiny, spiritual warfare, and perseverance. Written in real time during one of the most challenging seasons of her life, Unbreakable is not a pity story—it is a victory record. It speaks directly to anyone who has been counted out, misunderstood, or publicly judged and still chose to rise.
Writing Unbreakable was not an escape for Dr. Brown—it was an act of obedience. She wrote while under public scrutiny, while navigating uncertainty, and while choosing faith over fear in real time. Each page was shaped by prayer, reflection, and a refusal to let shame or narrative control define her future. Her work challenges a culture quick to cancel and slow to extend grace, inviting readers into deeper conversations about accountability, humanity, and restoration.
Dr. Brown is the Founder and CEO of Beauty After the Bars, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting justice-impacted women through stabilization, peer support, healing, and leadership development. She is a forensic peer specialist and community health worker, providing frontline, trauma-informed support to individuals navigating reentry, homelessness, recovery, and complex health challenges—often serving those society has given up on.
A lifelong learner and scholar, Dr. Brown maintains a 4.0 GPA as a senior at Johnson C. Smith University and holds multiple professional certifications across justice, health, and peer-support disciplines. Her work has been recognized with national honors and lifetime achievement awards and has been featured in media, film, faith spaces, classrooms, and community stages across the country.
At her core, Dr. Brown is a mother and grandmother. She is the proud mother of two adult daughters, Antoinette and Tijema, and the devoted grandmother of Byron, Jr. Her family remains her why—her anchor, her motivation, and her greatest legacy.
Dr. Brown writes for the fighters. The survivors. The ones still standing. She writes for readers who believe in redemption, second chances, and the power of faith to carry us through life’s fiercest storms. Her message is clear and uncompromising:
What tried to break you will not have the final word.
She lives in Charlotte, North Carolina, and continues to serve, speak, and write with purpose, power, and unwavering faith.
