John D. Matthews, MD MSc is a Senior Psychiatrist at the Benson-Henry Institute for Mind Body Medicine, Massachusetts General Hospital, and Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts. Inflammation in the Brain and the Body: A Mind-Body Hypothesis is the culmination of his lengthy and varied career in psychiatry. Dr. Matthews began his career in the basic sciences, earning his MSc degree. Following medical school at Loma Lina University and a psychiatric residency at the University of Michigan, Dr. Matthews received a 3-year post-doctoral National Research Service Award to study beta-endorphin regulation in depression at the University of Michigan’s Neuroscience Research Institute.
While deeply interested in the neurosciences, Dr. Matthews is also a committed clinician, leading him to a long career as a psychiatric hospitalist, including many years serving as Medical Director of Inpatient Psychiatry at MGH and as an outpatient clinician, all while continuing to pursue his research interests in psychopharmacology, psychotherapy, electroconvulsive therapy, suicide, and psychotic major depressive disorder.
