For the past 40 years, my life—much like my historical fiction—has been divided between India, where I have published numerous books and articles; Africa, where I continue to work in courts, police stations and prisons; and the UK, where I make my home. All my stories are grounded in extensive research, and the fact that I have lived in the places I write about and worked with the organisations I describe gives my writing its immediacy and credibility. In short, I have either lived what I write, visited the places I describe, read the surviving records, or interviewed those who endured the events. My stories also shine with a love of humanity and reflect my belief that ordinary people from different backgrounds can overcome fearsome odds when they unite behind a common purpose.
