Kara Briggs

Kara Briggs is a poet, author and journalist, whose calm elegance, precise language and spirit of the Pacific Northwest sings her people onto the page. A graduate of the Institute of American Indian Art, she celebrates the interconnectivity of the earth and her people, while with unflinching investigation reveals false narratives, problematic etymologies and extractive practices. Her first poetry collection, Rivers in My Veins, includes the 2024 James Welch Award winning poem Acknowledgement Two. At the heart of this collection a drum beats, uplifting Native Americans, women and the natural world. Her debut collection is already uplifting new conversations in American letters. In 2026, she is excited to bring forward a new collection.
