Mike Hower is the founder and principal consultant of Hower Impact, a sustainability communication and reporting consultancy that helps companies translate sustainability strategy into narratives that build trust, move stakeholders, and drive business value.
Based in Northern California, between the San Francisco Bay Area and Sacramento, Mike brings a rare dual perspective to his work: he’s been both the journalist scrutinizing corporate sustainability claims and the strategist helping companies communicate them credibly and authentically.
Mike began his career writing about sustainability strategy, social impact, supply chain engagement, and climate policy for GreenBiz (now Trellis) and other leading publications. He later worked at Edelman and other organizations, advising Fortune 500 companies on sustainability communication and developing best-in-class sustainability reports, before founding Hower Impact in 2023.
Mike hosts The Sustainability Communicator podcast and writes regularly about sustainability storytelling on LinkedIn and through his newsletter. He also speaks at industry events on sustainability communication topics.
He holds an M.A. in Strategic Communication from The George Washington University and the University of California, Davis. When he’s not working, Mike can be found exploring California’s trails with his golden retriever, Lincoln, or planning his next adventure with his family.
