Rock Savage is best known as the drummer for 90s noise rock group Barkmarket, who, when not on tour, could be heard regularly at such legendary New York City clubs as CBGBs.
Hunters & Gatherers is his first book.
Savage led a restless early life. Before being sent away to boarding school in Austin Texas, he spent his late childhood in Mexico, way down in Veracruz, where the jungle was the equivalent of a few blocks away down a dirt road. This reportedly explains why the jungle scenes in Hunters & Gatherers are so strikingly realistic (if indeed they are).
He moved to NYC in 1988 with industrial rock trio Miracle Room, whose shows at the original Knitting Factory on Houston St. regularly sold out.
Savage still lives in New York City’s East Village with his partner, abstract painter Juri Morioka, and their cat. And yeah, it’s changed a lot, but what are you gonna do? You can never go back--
