B.D. Godard

What does a man do with questions that don't always have answers?

B.D. Godard was born in Rawlins, Wyoming, and spent a decade in uniform—Air Force Security Forces, EOD augmentee, and military historian documenting America's B-1B and Minuteman III nuclear programs and the European A-10 program of the 1980s, whose job was to hold the Fulda Gap. At RAF Bentwaters and Woodbridge, he spent hours in the gym with the Pararescuemen of the 67th ARRS, listening to their stories and watching their brotherhood up close. Those men became the seed of Luis Cortez. He left the service with more questions than he arrived with.

So he kept moving. He flew freight and then airlines, then worked in aerospace and defense and later in IT. He's lived in the United Kingdom, Spain, and Italy—fourteen years on three continents—and traveled through most of the world in between, including every state but a stubborn corner of New England. He's stood in places where history happened and felt the weight of decisions made by people who didn't get to walk away from them.

Today he runs a commercial beekeeping operation of 2,000 colonies across California, Texas, and Wisconsin. He writes before dawn and works bees by day.

He is still hunting answers. That's why he writes.

Guardian Down asks what it costs a man to save others—and whether he can survive the answer.
