Martijn Flinterman is a sociologist specialising in how organisations deal with safety in complex environments. With a background in advisory work for Dutch major infrastructure projects and maintenance, he brings both practical and academic insights to the field of health, safety, and environment (HSE) management.
His first book, Managing Safety in Complexity: Making ‘Working Safely’ Possible Between Systems That Speak Different Codes (2025), introduces Niklas Luhmann’s systems theory to safety management. It gives HSE professionals a fresh perspective to deal with paradoxes, challenge assumptions, and rethink how organisations construct “safety.”
In addition to authoring books and contributing to professional journals, Martijn is active as a reviewer, sociological researcher, and supervisor of students and interns. He regularly gives presentations on organisational safety and resilience, helping teams to see beyond checklists and compliance toward more systemic understanding.
A lifelong learner and innovative thinker, Martijn combines determination, independence, and sociological depth with a passion for creating inclusive and effective work environments. His work challenges norms and opens up new perspectives on safety, risk, and organisational life.
