Amanda Newell

Hello, I’m Amanda Newell, an artistic photographer with a background in human ecology and anthrozoology (meaning our connection and interaction to the land, each other and other animals in plain English!). Formerly a healthcare professional trained in movement and mental health, when I found myself seriously ill I turned to creativity with the camera and soon realised the camera was now my co-conspirator and the land, world, coast, street, woodlands - everywhere, my collaborator.

Now this joyful practice is my full time job, creating, writing and teaching.

I explore impressionist and pictorial imagery using a camera and the iPhone with creative techniques including intentional camera movement (ICM) and multiple exposure and then the digital darkroom is to me what editing is to writers; the place for shaping and developing the sensation of experience of time and place.

I draw on techniques from photographic history, art, design and explore different ways to use the body, camera and environment collaboratively to create images with a unique and personal twist.

Through my Demystified Series and my business The Photographic Artisan, the YouTube channel and teaching, I share step-by-step techniques, creative workflows, and ways to connect deeply with nature, subject and light with your camera. You can find me on my website of the same name.
