I grew up on the border between Northern Ireland and the Irish Republic during the years of violence. After emigrating to Canada, I built a successful career as a business professor. Yet I still feel like a creature of two worlds, a borderer. To be a borderer is to live like a bird in a storm, caught in restless in-betweenness. It exposes you to other realities; if you are open to it, it shakes and re-shapes your sense of place, your convictions, your values.

I love to write about people like me, people who straddle different worlds. Border people, caught between opposing forces. My books Design Thinking at Work (2018) and Redesigning Value (2025) deal with the challenges faced by creative people in large organizations. My current work, Magical Line, is about those who live, like I did, on the Irish border and how they navigate between a bitter past and an uncertain future.
