Jim Detjen

Jim Detjen is the founder of The M Institute™, an institution dedicated to strengthening human discernment through disciplined inquiry. He is also the founder of One Point Six Research and creator and host of Think First, the Institute’s public inquiry platform, where he explores the forces that shape perception, judgment, and public understanding in an age of accelerating technological and informational change.

Jim began his career in the U.S. Army’s 3rd Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard), where he served in an environment defined by discipline, precision, and trust. Participating in presidential ceremonies and national military events, he developed an appreciation for institutions, responsibility, and enduring principles that continue to shape his work today.

For more than twenty-five years, Jim has advised organizations, educational institutions, nonprofit leaders, and executive teams on strategy, organizational development, communication, and long-term institutional growth. His work has spanned business, education, athletics, technology, and public life while remaining centered on a single question: How do thoughtful people perceive reality accurately enough to exercise sound judgment?

He is the author of Distorted: The Psychology of Gaslighting, the Power of Story, and the Practice of Clarity, a book examining how narrative, persuasion, technology, and institutional systems shape human perception—and how discernment can help people perceive reality more accurately than appearances suggest.

Today, Jim’s work is focused on building The M Institute through publishing, public inquiry, research, intellectual property, and Fellowship.

His work is guided by one foundational belief: better societies begin with better discernment.

He and his wife, Reina, live in Utah and are the parents of three children.
