Kate St James

Kate St James, FDIA is an Australian interior designer, author, and editor with over four decades of experience shaping the design landscape. A Fellow of the Design Institute of Australia, Kate has served as President of the Australian Architecture Association and sat on the Board of the Australian Institute of Architects (NSW Chapter).

Her career spans co-founding award-winning design firms, creating timeless interiors for homes across Australia, and leading some of the country’s most respected design publications, including Luxury Home Design and Grand Designs Australia magazines.

Kate’s work blends elegance, sustainability, and practicality — proving that design is not just about how spaces look, but how they feel and how they last. Her writing brings this philosophy to life through stories, reflections, and practical lessons from her years in the industry.

When she’s not writing or consulting, Kate continues to champion Australian designers, sustainable brands, and artisans, inspiring homeowners to create interiors that are beautiful, authentic, and enduring.

Her latest digital project, “Breaking Down AI – The Designer’s View,” explores how technology and human intuition intersect in the creative process.
