Gene Pelc

Gene Pelc (born Eugene Joseph Pelc, April 16, 1944) is an American entrepreneur, producer, and entertainment industry veteran renowned for pioneering the international exchange of media between the United States and Japan.

He launched his career as a radio announcer in New York before joining Marvel Comics in the late 1970s, where he became known as "Marvel's Man in Japan." Pelc was instrumental in bringing Marvel’s iconic characters to Japanese audiences, most notably by producing the seminal 1978 Japanese live-action Spider-Man (Supaidāman) series. This project not only bridged superhero storytelling across cultures but also laid the foundations for the Super Sentai series, which in turn inspired the Power Rangers franchise in the US.

Pelc's contributions extend to multiple animated and live-action projects, including involvement in Battle Fever J, Denshi Sentai Denjiman, Taiyo Sentai Sun Vulcan, The Adventures of T-Rex, and animation coordination for The Transformers, G.I. Joe, My Little Pony, and Pink Panther. He co-created the comic book Shogun Warriors with Stan Lee, which influenced the evolution of the Transformers universe.

Among his most notable publishing achievements, Pelc initiated Marvel’s best-selling title Francis, Brother of the Universe, a comic on St. Francis of Assisi that outsold all other Marvel titles of its time. He also successfully orchestrated the creation of The Life of Pope John Paul II at Marvel, overcoming international communication hurdles during Poland’s Communist era to gather authentic source material.

Outside of comics, Pelc played a significant role in the professional wrestling industry, producing international TV specials, including Bushido: The Way of the Warrior and serving as a booker and commentator for UWF International in Japan.

Pelc’s trailblazing efforts in licensing, adaptation, and cross-cultural collaboration have made lasting impacts on global pop culture, particularly in the fusion of American comics, Japanese tokusatsu, and animation.
