Bryan Reimer

I’m a Research Scientist at the MIT Center for Transportation and Logistics AgeLab, where I lead multidisciplinary efforts to understand and shape the future of mobility and AI. I founded and co-direct both the MIT Advanced Vehicle Technology (AVT) Consortium and the Advanced Human Factors Evaluator for Attentional Demand (AHEAD) Consortium.

My research sits at the intersection of human behavior, technology, and policy. Through extensive lab, simulation, field, and naturalistic studies, I focus on challenges in attention support, automated driving, ADAS, electric vehicles, and AI—always with the goal of enhancing benefits to humans and society such as safety, convenience, comfort, sustainability, and efficiency.

I’ve authored or coauthored over 300 publications and reports that inform technology development, business strategy, and public policy. Outside of MIT, I serve on the Research Advisory Board of Autoliv, advise AI Sweden, and previously advised Affectiva through its acquisition by Smart Eye.

In 2024, I was appointed by U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg to the Department of Transportation’s Transforming Transportation Advisory Committee (TTAC), where I served as Vice Chair of the AI Subcommittee. That same year, I was also appointed to the FAA’s Human Factors in Aviation Safety Aviation Rulemaking Committee (HF Task Force ARC).

I’m a frequent keynote speaker and contributor to global conversations on the future of mobility, safety, and human-centered AI. My 2018 TEDx talk, “There’s More to the Safety of Driverless Cars than AI,” explores the urgent need for public-private collaboration and consumer trust to ensure automation achieves its life-saving potential. My forthcoming book, How to Make AI Useful: Moving Beyond the Hype to Real Progress in Business, Society, and Life (with futurist Magnus Lindkvist), expands on these themes—offering a pragmatic roadmap for unlocking AI’s value across industries.

In recognition of my work, I received the 2024 Bartimaeus Award from Henry Ford Health, the 2019 Jack A. Kraft Innovator Award from the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society, and the inaugural Autos2050 Impact Award in 2018.
