I am a consultant and educator focusing on the peace education curriculum design, human security, peacebuilding, conflict transformation and nonviolence. With more than more than thirty-five years of work in 30 countries in Asia and Africa, I work mainly at the community level. For more than two decades I have been a core facilitator at the Mindanao Peacebuilding Institute in the Philippines. I am currently co-chair of the Improving Practices Working Group for Global Partners for the Prevention of Armed Conflict (GPPAC). Locally I am on the board of a local organization doing mediation, restorative conferencing and circle process facilitation. Globally, I am on the board of the Nonviolent Peaceforce, an organization that focuses on unarmed civilian peacekeeping in active conflict zones.
As a Mennonite, my faith tradition grounded his commitment to nonviolence where I lived that out volunteering and giving leadership to programs for the Mennonite Central Committee in Somalia, Eswatini, and Philippines.
I served as Peacemaker-in-Residence for Elizabethtown College’s Center for Global Understanding and Peacemaking from 2012-2019 teaching undergraduate peace courses. I was named Senior Fellow for Human Security at the Alliance for Peacebuilding and a Senior Fellow at the Social Enterprise Service Group as a subject matter expert in peacebuilding. As a Fulbright Specialist, I supported the peace studies program at the Symbiosis School for Liberal Arts in Pune, India. I am on the roster of UNDP ExpRes preapproved consultants in conflict resolution and peacebuilding. I am a core member of the Global Partners for the Prevention of Armed Conflict (GPPAC) Improving Practices Working Group. Since Covid-19 I have designed and facilitated Zoom based peace and justice trainings including the designing and teaching the Peace Education: Pedagogies for Change course at Mindanao Peacebuilding Institute. Before the global shut down I facilitated workshops at the Initiatives of Change, Caux Forum on Just Governance for Human Security in Switzerland.
My education includes an MA in Religion with a Graduate Certificate in Conflict Transformation from Eastern Mennonite Seminary/University in Harrisonburg, Virginia (2001). I earned a Teaching for Higher Education Certificate from Temple University (2014) and a BA in International Development, an AA in Industrial Arts and Minor in Communications from Bethel College in North Newton, Kansas (1986).
