Pawe? Szczerkowski

Paweł Szczerkowski is a literary translator and medical doctor from Szczecin, Poland, with a lifelong passion for storytelling and the poetic spirit of the Polish language. He translates the works of Kornel Makuszyński, one of Poland’s greatest children’s authors.

In 2024, together with his friend Mary Ashwood — an American writer and editor — he published their first translation of Makuszyński's classic Szatan z siódmej klasy, titled The Twelfth Grade Devil. In 2025, they released Argument About Basia, a luminous English version of Awantura o Basię, the touching tale of a spirited orphan girl who brings warmth and upheaval to the lives of the adults who take her in.

With a careful ear for rhythm, tone, and humour, Paweł and Mary bring Makuszyński’s prose to life in English — faithful, natural, and full of quiet charm. Their translations open a door to a world of mischief, wonder, and gentle wisdom, with more adventures still to come.
