Tyra L. Nelson

Tyra L. Nelson is an educator and former high school English teacher who was born and partially raised on the South Side of Chicago.

When she was nine, she wrote a whole short story in rhyme and read it to her class. They loved it! Enjoying the positive attention she received from her teachers and classmates, she embraced her gift of creative expression and the writer in her was born.

A single mother, Tyra’s sons encouraged her to finish “The 9: From the South Side to Whitney M. Young Magnet High School”, her debut novel. She has several other projects in the works, including “The Send Away Kid”, a co-authored series of short chapter books about a loving grandfather who captures his family’s attention by sharing unlikely tales of adventure.

Tyra currently resides in Minneapolis, Minnesota and dreams of one day moving overseas, where she will write, teach, and lie on the beach.
