Ed Gibson

Edward George Gibson is a former NASA astronaut, pilot, engineer, and physicist and the crew member of the historic Skylab 4 mission. Born on November 8, 1936, Gibson has lived a life defined by exploration, curiosity, and a relentless pursuit of knowledge both on Earth and far beyond it.

A graduate of the University of Rochester and the California Institute of Technology, Gibson began his career in jet propulsion research before serving as a scientist for the Philco Corporation. In 1965, he joined NASA as part of Astronaut Group 4; the agency’s first team of scientist-astronauts. He worked on the Apollo program, including supporting the second Moon landing (Apollo 12), and later helped shape the development of America’s first space station, Skylab.

In 1973–74, Gibson flew as science pilot aboard Skylab 4, spending over 84 days in space alongside Commander Gerald Carr and Pilot William Pogue, a record-breaking mission that expanded humanity’s understanding of life in space.

His book, Space: Ever Farther, Ever Faster, captures the essence of space exploration through the lens of firsthand experience. It is both a chronicle of technological advancement and a deeply human reflection on what it means to push boundaries.
