Abbot John Kurichianil OSB is a distinguished Benedictine monk, Bible scholar, and spiritual author from St. Thomas Benedictine Abbey in Kappadu, Kerala, South India. He played a key role in founding this monastery, the first Syro-Malabar Benedictine monastery in India.
He was born on February 20, 1946, and was ordained a priest on March 23, 1972. He pursued theological studies at St. Peter's Pontifical Seminary in Bangalore and later specialized in Sacred Scripture at the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome.
Since 1976, Fr. Kurichianil has served as a visiting professor in several major seminaries in India. These include St. Peter's Seminary and Kristhujyoti (Salesian Seminary) in Bangalore, and St. Thomas Apostolic Seminary in Kottayam, Kerala. As a respected teacher of Scripture, he has influenced generations of monks and students across India.
Abbot John is also a gifted author. His most important work is a three-volume series titled A Biblical Approach to the Rule of St. Benedict. In this series, he explains how the teachings of the Rule of St. Benedict are rooted in the Bible. He emphasizes the importance of silence, obedience, community life, and manual labor. He also shows how Christian and monastic life are not escapes from the world but deep commitments to live like Jesus in prayer, humility, and service.
In addition to this, Abbot John has written many other significant books, including:
Before Thee Face to Face: A Study on Prayer in the Bible
Studies on the Gospel of St. John
Studies on the Prophets
Our Fathers in Faith
Devant toi, face à face (French)
Trésors de l'Évangile de Jean (French)
These books have been translated into Malayalam and French. They are praised for their clear language, deep understanding of Scripture, and practical spiritual insights. Monks, students, and lay faithful alike find his works deeply enriching.
Abbot John has also contributed numerous articles to theological journals. Some of his well-known articles include “Early Christian Community in the Acts of the Apostles and the Monastic Community” and “Benedictine Identity.” His writings are studied in monasteries around the world.
Fr. John once described himself as “a farmer and a biblical scholar.” This simple phrase reflects his deep love for both Scripture and the down-to-earth Benedictine way of life. He embodies the spirit of ora et labora—“prayer and work”—a key principle of Benedictine spirituality.
Abbot John Kurichianil OSB’s life is a beautiful example of how ancient monastic values can still guide people today. Through his teaching, leadership, and writing, he continues to inspire many to live a life centered on God, Scripture, and loving service.
