Mr Bernard N Lee Jr

His name is Bernard N. Lee, Jr., but his friends call him Bernie. Bernard grew up in the fifties and sixties, following World War II and the Korean Conflict. Those times had a profound impact on his family, and his father’s career in the US Army. Bernard kept a mental diary of people and places, during his father’s tours of duty, at military posts throughout the United States and Europe. Those stories form the basis for his memoir series, “A Look Back in Time: Memoir of a Military Kid in the Fifties, Vol. I, II, & 2nd Edition,” which was a 2019 Best Book Awards Finalist and a 2020 International Best Book Awards Finalist.

Bernard began writing early. He spoke frequently in church; competed in poetry and essay contests; contributed to his high school, and college, publications. Bernard studied engineering at Cameron College in Oklahoma and Howard University in Washington, D.C. While at Howard, Bernard joined the Army ROTC program, obtained a private pilot’s license, and earned a regular army commission. Bernard retired as a Captain from the Army Reserves. During his career, Bernard spent thirty-four years as an engineer with AT&T companies, in NJ.

Following retirement, Bernard obtained a Master of Arts in Education and taught high school classes at Somerset Vocational & Technical HS. Bernard was also a director for a Program for the Acceleration of Minority Careers in Engineering (PACE) hosted at Rutgers University for students pursuing colleges with STEM programs. Bernard moved, with his wife, to Georgia in 2007.

Bernard states, “I am a better writer when I stay engaged with meaningful activities in my community.”

Bernard served as a director of the “How Big Is Your Dream?! Foundation, which prepared young adults for careers in music and the arts. Bernard taught chess to elementary, middle, and high school students to motivate them to focus on learning. Bernard developed, and taught, a Summer School Reading Curriculum (based upon his book series) at Hill’s Academy in Conyers, Georgia.

Bernard has been a frequent guest speaker on the Tribe Family Channel™ radio program. Bernard is a member of the Atlanta Writers Club; the Author’s Guild; the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators; the African American Literature Book Club; the Alliance of Independent Authors; the Military Writer’s Society of America; the American Legion; and Alfred Street Baptist Church of Alexandria, VA. Bernard lives with his wife of forty-nine years, Edwina, in Chandler, Arizona.
