Writing has always been a part of my life but it wasn't until a friend asked me to write about his experiences in a WWII Lancaster Bomber, that I realized just how much I love bringing words to life.
In 2021, my daughter Lauren and I had our first book, "Walking Away from Hate: Our journey through extremism" traditionally published. It's a memoir and what sets it apart is that our story is told from two points of view - Lauren bares her soul about her time in a Neo-nazi crew on the streets of Toronto while I show the toll her extremist lifestyle took on our family.
In 2025 I self-published my second book, "Surviving Extremism: A parent's guide to radicalization" as a companion to our memoir. Families are the silent victims of hate and this book is my way of helping parents survive it, while maintaining and strengthening relationships with their loved ones who've fallen down the rabbit hole of extremism.
Ours is a happy ending...Lauren and I are closer than ever now, due in part to writing a book together but also because we both work and participate in hate-related professions. It's been a long and painful journey for me...certainly, writing about hate is a long way from my old life of Land Surveying and Civil Engineering, but I know we're making a difference and that's what counts.
In my spare time, I raise future service dogs...one puppy at a time!
