David Cook

David J. Cook spent decades building companies, navigating high-stakes crises, and helping businesses turn risk into opportunity. Then he retired — and discovered that nobody had prepared him for what came next.

That experience became the foundation for his writing. His first book, Retirement Shock, tackles the identity loss, restlessness, and quiet purposelessness that catch so many high achievers off guard when the work suddenly stops. His second, Unsubscribed: The Art of Opting Out of the Norm, profiles six real people who walked away from conventional lives entirely — and what they found on the other side.

A serial entrepreneur and retired senior executive, David holds a degree in Psychology and a Diploma in Strategy and Innovation from Oxford University. He brings the same analytical rigor he applied in business to the questions most people only ask themselves at 2 a.m.: What now? Who am I without the work? Is this really it?

He lives in Sarasota, Florida, with his wife Suzanne, and spends his time traveling, boating, cycling, and writing about the lives people build when they stop following someone else's script.
