Hi there!

I'm updating this in December 2025, to let you know about our latest novel — a Victorian thriller, Some Dark Force, written with my co-author, Victoria Olsen. Think Jack the Ripper meets Dracula, complete with atmospheric detail and true crime reports from that awful fall of 1888 when a notorious killer preyed upon poor women in London's East End.

Victoria and I were Victorianists first — we both have PhDs in Victorian literature and culture — and then became close friends and co-authors later. Some Dark Force is the first in a series involving an unlikely band of women detectives.

Looking for something more contemporary? Check out my jail mystery series starring an amateur sleuth who teaches at the San Francisco County Jail and has a knack for stumbling upon trouble and dead bodies.

Like my character, I taught at the jail for several years. Unlike my heroine, I've never stumbled across a dead body.

I also write domestic thrillers, such as I Want Him Dead, under my pen name (and initials of my full legal name), C.B. Peterson.

When I'm not writing, I'm usually dealing with an ever-growing collection of animals who somehow wander into my backyard and take up residence. The husband is not pleased but he is ever tolerant.
