David M Gough was born and raised in the industrial heartland of Leigh, Lancashire—a place where grit, graft, and good humour are woven into everyday life. Shaped by the rugged northern landscape and the working-class spirit that defined his community, David’s writing is rich in authenticity, sharp wit, and emotional depth. He currently lives in Lowton, Cheshire with his wife Isla and two extremely lazy and always hungry bulldogs, Harry and Ernie.
Educated through the British apprenticeship system, David began his career in the nuclear industry, cutting his teeth on the shop floor before moving into the oil and gas sector as a contractor. His years in heavy industry weren’t just about pipes, pressure vessels, and safety protocols—they were a masterclass in human character. In every smoke-filled mess room and windswept yard, there were stories: of resilience, rebellion, loss, laughter, and survival. Those stories stayed with him.
It wasn’t until later in life, after years of touring oilfields and dodging bureaucracy, that David turned his hand to writing. He began with the urge to preserve the voices and experiences of a world that was disappearing—the tight-knit camaraderie of pitmen, the blunt honesty of the northern tongue, and the unvarnished realities of life on the margins. Writing became his way of holding a mirror to the communities that raised him and honouring the lives so often overlooked.
His debut novel, Blackened Souls, The Price of Coal, is a powerful young adult story rooted in a fictional mining disaster, aimed at readers aged 14 and up. It explores themes of courage, grief, and escape, wrapped in a narrative that doesn’t flinch from the hard truths—but still finds room for humour and hope. The book is available in paperback and on Kindle via Amazon.
Away from the page, David is a lover of live music, classic northern comedy, cooking and short walks with a proper real ale waiting at the end. He’s also a keen observer of human behaviour—something that continually fuels his storytelling. Whether he’s at a local pub or just people-watching in town, he’s always collecting scraps of conversation and flashes of character that might one day make their way into a chapter.
Currently, David is working on a memoir-style follow-up that traces his journey from apprentice to contractor, weaving together hilarious, harrowing, and downright unbelievable tales from the nuclear and oil and gas industries. It's set to deliver the same blend of grit, humour, and insight that readers have come to expect.
David M. Gough writes with a Northern soul and a rebel heart—because some stories don’t just deserve to be told, they demand it.
