Stephen Maddox was born in the middle of nowhere in Minnesota. His family then moved to the Black Hills of South Dakota (again), then to an even more remote part of North Dakota, and finally, to the northwest suburbs of Chicago (all before the age of eight). He grew up in Chicago in the 90s (watch THE LAST DANCE on Netflix and you can see his era of Chicago). After working his way through university in Florida to earn a B.S. (that acronym sits about right) in Communication with minors in Music and Religion, he found himself in southwest Missouri in the hometown of David Webb, better known as Jason Bourne (yes, he knows Bourne is fictional). If you want a sense of his eleven years there, just watch OZARK on Netflix, although they got the local drug wrong (mom, don't watch this show, it's really inappropriate).
In 2017, Stephen moved to London, England (not Georgia), and now holds dual U.S. and U.K. citizenship (God save the Queen—R.I.P.). His creative career spans producing live events (arenas & theatres, oh my), film, and TV, earning him accolades like Best Screenplay at the TweetFest London Film Festival for his short film LUCID. His screenplays have landed in the top 15% of major competitions, including the Austin Film Festival, the Nicholl Fellowship, and Coverfly’s top-ranked scripts. His novel JESUS INC. began as a feature screenplay that also saw success as a semi-finalist in the Los Angeles International Screenplay Awards and a quarterfinalist in the Screencraft Screenwriting Fellowship.
As a writer, director, and producer (because wearing one hat is far too dull), Stephen has created award-winning narrative short films and feature films, music videos, short-form documentaries, and directed a series pilot with a couple more features in development/pre-production.
Since 2019, he has run Southside Films. Now, he's translating his cinematic storytelling into fiction. His debut novella SEE YOU SOON includes the bonus novelette BACK ISSUE: SHADOW, and his first novel, JESUS INC., brings his unique voice to the page.
